78th Annual Tony Awards Preview

The 78th annual Tony Awards are set to take place tonight, honoring the best of Broadway’s productions over the past year. Hosted by Cynthia Erivo, a Tony Award winner for her role in The Color Purple, this year’s nominees include some of Hollywood’s biggest stars alongside Broadway legends such as Audra McDonald and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Record-Breaking Season

This season has seen record-breaking ticket sales on Broadway, with shows like Good Night and Good Luck earning $1.83 billion at the box office. Among this impressive lineup is Oh Mary!, written by Cole Escola. This one-act show follows Mary Todd Lincoln through various stages of grief following President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

Nominations and Themes

Oh Mary! has received five nominations, including:

  • Best New Play
  • Best Leading Actor for Cole Escola

These nominations reflect its resonance with audiences. Director Rachel Chavkin noted, "It is a play about grief… And I think that people are really hungry for plays about grief right now."

Cole Escola shared his vision for the play, stating, "I’ve been doing theater since I was eight years old… So there wasn’t really ever a point where I thought about making money or getting famous. I just wanted to make something that would be fun for me and my friends."

He elaborated on his writing process, saying, "I started thinking about what would happen if you were in your house alone after someone died… What would you do? What would you say? How would you feel? And then I started thinking more broadly than just myself… What if everyone was going through this?"

The play has received widespread critical acclaim for its unique take on historical events and its exploration of themes such as grief and trauma.
