80th U.S. Women’s Open: Mao Saigo Takes the Lead

Mao Saigo, a Chinese player with seven professional victories, stormed to the lead early in the second round of the 80th U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills on May 30.

Impressive Performance

Saigo’s performance included a 66, the best round of the tournament, leaving her at eight-under with a three-stroke lead over six other players heading into Friday. This victory marked Saigo’s first LPGA Tour win, achieved earlier this year at The Club at Carlton Woods in Texas, where she triumphed in an eight-hole playoff against Nasa Hataoka.

Previous U.S. Women’s Open Experience

Saigo has experience competing in previous U.S. Women’s Opens:

  • 2020: Finished tied for fifth place at Champions Retreat Golf Course in Georgia.
  • Past Two Years: Made cuts at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.
  • Last Year: Finished tied for thirty-third place.

With this recent success, Saigo has solidified her position as a formidable player on tour.

Saigo’s Reflections

"I’m just trying to stay focused," said Mao Saigo after winning last month’s tournament. "I’ve been working really hard on my game lately. It feels amazing to have won my first LPGA Tour title," she added.

Minjee Lee: Aiming for History

Another player looking to make history is South Korea’s Minjee Lee, currently ranked number one globally. Lee has won four major championships, including two U.S. Women’s Opens.

In an interview with The New York Times, Lee expressed how much he values competitive golf, stating it allows him "to express himself freely" without concern for others’ opinions. He enjoys playing golf alone for self-reflection and believes it helps develop mental strength, essential for success both on and off the course.

Training and Preparation

Lee has been training hard since January, focusing particularly on his short game and chipping from different angles. He emphasized the importance of practice, saying, "Practice makes perfect," but also acknowledged the need for rest to prevent burnout.

Recently, Lee took some time off due to health reasons but is now back to full-time training. He aims to become only the third woman golfer ever to win five majors, joining the ranks of Annika Sorenstam (10) and Karrie Webb (7). Heading into Friday, Minjee currently sits third overall after shooting rounds of 68-69-70-68=275 (-11).
