The Dartmouth baseball team made history on Saturday afternoon as they advanced to the Elite 8 for the first time since 2014 with a thrilling 9-5 win over Shepherd Hill in a Div. 2 Sweet 16 game.
Game Highlights
-
The Big Green (23-3) came out strong in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs off of two hits and three walks.
-
Freshman Quintin Frias played a crucial role in this momentum shift with his first varsity at-bat being a key single that sparked this five-run inning.
- "I was just trying to stay calm and be myself," Frias said after the game. "I knew I had my teammates behind me and we were all working together."
-
Junior Jayden Nunes-Medeiros also contributed significantly with two hits and three RBIs for Dartmouth, vital in securing their win.
- "We’ve been working hard all season long," Nunes-Medeiros said. "To see it pay off like this is an incredible feeling."
-
The Big Green’s offense continued to roll throughout the game, scoring four more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to seal their victory.
-
Shepherd Hill (20-6) fought back with three runs of their own in both the fourth and seventh innings but ultimately fell short against Dartmouth’s strong pitching performance.
Next Steps
The Big Green will now face Reading Memorial on Sunday at Worcester State University at noon, looking to continue their winning streak and make further progress in the tournament.
- "It’s going to be tough," head coach Bob Whalen said about facing Reading Memorial next week. "They’re a great team with some talented players so we’ll have our work cut out for us."
Despite being underdogs coming into Saturday’s matchup against Shepherd Hill, Dartmouth proved themselves as one of Division II baseball’s best teams by advancing through another round of competition without losing any games yet this postseason run.
