The New York Mets have faced significant challenges this season with runners in scoring position, currently ranking 27th in Major League Baseball with a batting average of .218. Despite their efforts, the team has yet to find a solution to this ongoing issue.
Hitting Coach’s Perspective
Hitting coach Jeremy Barnes acknowledged the frustration associated with these struggles, stating, "It’s frustrating. But it’s a stat that can change quickly."
Standout Performers
Pete Alonso
One player who has bucked this trend is Pete Alonso. As of Friday, Alonso was hitting 23-for-65 (.354) with runners in scoring position and had contributed seven of the team’s 16 home runs in such situations. Barnes praised Alonso for his ability to perform well under pressure, saying, "Alonso is one guy who has been able to do it. He’s been able to put himself up there and get big hits when we need them."
Luis Torrens
Luis Torrens has also shown improvement, hitting 11 out of 49 attempts (.224) with runners on base. However, Barnes noted that Torrens still needs to work on his overall game, stating, "He needs some work."
Juan Soto’s Insights
Juan Soto shared his own struggles with runners in scoring position during an interview after Thursday night’s loss against the Chicago Cubs. When asked about his difficulties in coming through for his teammates, Soto shrugged and remarked, "s–t happens." He emphasized that he tries not to be too hard on himself, acknowledging that bad luck can play a significant role in these situations.
Despite his struggles, Soto entered play Friday ranked 12th among all qualified hitters with a batting average of .287. He maintained that his approach remains consistent, saying, "I’m always trying to do the same thing every time up there: swing hard & try to hit the ball out of the park!"
Looking Ahead
The Mets are eager to turn things around as they begin their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies today at Citi Field.
