Portsmouth High School Softball Team Falls in Quarterfinals

The Portsmouth High School softball team fell to top-seeded Londonderry 1-0 in the Division I quarterfinals on Sunday at Londonderry.

Game Highlights

  • Pitching Performance:

    • Junior Sarah Sokolnicki pitched well for the Clippers, allowing four hits and striking out nine over six innings.
    • Coach Bill Douglass praised her performance.
  • Offensive Struggles:

    • Piper Hindle, Laura Milks, and Emi Greco each reached base on a walk for Portsmouth, but they were unable to score any runs.
  • Lancers’ Success:

    • Elisabeth Kearney of the Lancers was nearly unhittable, striking out 17 batters and walking three while not allowing a hit.
    • The Lancers scored their only run in the sixth inning when Kearney singled home Emily Gagnon from second base with two outs.

Coach’s Reflection

Douglass expressed pride in his team’s competitive level throughout their postseason journey. He believes that despite this loss, it does not diminish their accomplishments during the playoffs. The team has grown into strong competitors through hard work and dedication, setting them up well for future seasons.

Portsmouth finished its season with an overall record of 12-8 after falling short against Londonderry.

  • Pinkerton vs. Spaulding (Division I):

    • No. 3 Pinkerton defeated No. 11 Spaulding, with Meg Uraskevich leading offensively.
    • Izzy Brennan, CJ Dexter, and Maddie Hartman also contributed hits.
    • Hartman excelled on the mound, giving up five hits and earning nine strikeouts in her six-inning stint.
  • Oyster River vs. Campbell (Division II):

    • No. 3 Oyster River cruised past No. 11 Campbell, scoring eight runs early.
    • Aliza Parks and Laura Boughton both had double-digit hit counts, while Sam Bishop, Morgan Trela, and Kate Sheehan contributed to the victory.
    • Bishop pitched four frames, allowing only two hits before Trela shut down the fifth inning.
  • Newmarket vs. PCA (Division IV):

    • Newmarket secured a spot advancing further after defeating PCA.
