Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has been busy this offseason, and it’s clear that he’s not done yet. The team is still in need of upgrades at the guard and wing positions, as well as a starting-level center. While some fans may be holding out hope for a big-name signing, it’s unlikely that the Lakers will make any major splashes in free agency.
Potential Return of Lonzo Ball
One player who could potentially return to the Lakers is guard Lonzo Ball. According to beat writer Jovan Buha, Ball would be interested in re-signing with the team if his price is right and he stays healthy. However, Ball has struggled with injuries throughout his career, which makes it difficult for him to commit long-term.
Injury History
Since being drafted second overall by the Lakers in 2017, Ball has played in just 287 games due to various issues. A torn meniscus kept him out for three years after suffering an injury during a game against Houston on January 14th of last season.
"I’m feeling good," said Ball when asked about his health during an interview with ESPN last week. "I’ve been working hard on my body since I got hurt."
Performance When Healthy
When healthy, Ball has proven himself to be a solid starter at point guard. In his last full season before suffering an injury (2020-21), he averaged:
- 13 points per game
- 5 rebounds per game
- 5 assists per game
- 37% shooting from three-point range
Ball also showed significant improvement in his three-point shooting after joining the New Orleans Pelicans via trade from Chicago following one year with Milwaukee.
"He was able to get more comfortable playing off-the-ball," said assistant coach Willie Green about Ball’s transition. "He had some great opportunities where we were able to get him open shots."
Concerns Moving Forward
Despite showing promise on offense and defense alike when healthy, there are concerns regarding whether this version of Lonzo can stay on the court enough going forward. The injuries have taken their toll both physically and mentally.
Recent Contract Extension
Recently, Ball signed a contract extension worth $20 million guaranteed over two years:
- $10 million guaranteed next season
- $10 million team option for the following campaign
As the Lakers continue to navigate their offseason strategy, the situation surrounding Lonzo Ball remains a key point of interest for fans and analysts alike.
