Tyler Shough's Journey in the Saints' Rookie Minicamp

Tyler Shough was in the midst of participating in the New Orleans Saints’ rookie minicamp when he heard the news: Derek Carr, his quarterback coach and a player he had grown close to, was retiring. The 25-year-old quarterback from Texas Tech had been looking forward to learning from Carr during his first season with the Saints.

Focus on Development

"I’m still learning the playbook and getting to know my teammates," Shough said. "I’m not considered for the starting job yet, but I’m focused on taking it one day at a time."

Shough’s comments came after head coach Kellen Moore announced that an open competition would ensue for who will start at quarterback this season. Moore stated that Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener will also be vying for the spot.

Fierce Competition Ahead

The competition is expected to be fierce, with all three quarterbacks looking to make a strong impression on their coaches and teammates. However, Shough remains committed to his goal of becoming a successful NFL quarterback.

"I’ve always dreamed about playing in this league," he said. "I’ve worked hard my whole life for this moment."

Preparation and Mindset

Shough has been working out since January, preparing himself physically and mentally for what lies ahead. He has also been studying film of other quarterbacks to learn new techniques and strategies.

"I’ve always tried to be proactive," he said. "If I don’t know something or if I don’t understand something, I’ll ask questions until I do."

Despite being part of an open competition, Shough is not feeling any added pressure or stress about competing against Rattler or Haener.

"It’s just football," he said simply when asked how it feels competing against other quarterbacks who are trying out for the same position as him.
