The Colorado Rockies have parted ways with manager Bud Black, the team announced Sunday. The decision comes after a dismal start to the season, with the team beginning 7-33.
Bud Black’s Tenure
- Black’s tenure as manager of the Rockies began in 2010 and has been marked by inconsistent results.
- He led the team to a National League pennant in 2007 while managing San Diego but struggled to replicate that success in Colorado.
Management Changes
- General Manager Bill Schmidt stated, "We’re going to try and turn it around," before announcing the decision.
- Third base coach Warren Schaeffer will take over as interim manager for the remainder of the season. Schaeffer has been a member of Black’s coaching staff since 2019 and is well-respected within the organization.
- Schmidt praised Schaeffer, saying, "Warren is an excellent baseball man. He’s got great experience on our staff here."
- Hitting coach Clint Hurdle will assume duties as bench coach following the departure of bench coach Mike Redmond.
Challenges Ahead
The Rockies face an uphill battle in their quest for improvement. Despite a win against San Diego at Coors Field, they still hold baseball’s worst 40-game start since Baltimore in 1988, when they were 6-34.
Upcoming Games
- The Rockies’ next challenge awaits Monday night against Texas as they begin a road trip that could make or break their season.
- With only one series remaining before interleague play begins on May 29th at home against the St. Louis Cardinals (May 28th), every game counts if they want any chance at making up ground lost early this year.
Starting pitcher Kyle Freeland expressed optimism, stating, "We’re going into Texas tomorrow night looking forward." He pitched six strong innings, allowing just two earned runs off five hits, including one walk, while striking out four batters en route to earning his first win since April 3rd against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
