The Toronto Maple Leafs were left to ponder what could have been after a 2-0 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series on Tuesday night.
Game Overview
The Panthers, who are rounding into Stanley Cup champion form, dominated the game with their speed and aggression. Key statistics from the game include:
- Shots on Goal: Panthers 34, Maple Leafs 22
- Possession Time: Significant edge for the Panthers
- Penalties: Panthers 3, Maple Leafs 7
Joseph Woll kept the game close for most of the night, making several key saves early on to keep his team within striking distance. However, he was unable to prevent Sam Bennett from scoring in the third period after intercepting a pass from William Nylander.
Player Reactions
"It was one of those games where we didn’t create much offensively," said Auston Matthews. "I thought we played well enough to win."
The goal by Bennett sealed the win for Florida and tied the series at two games apiece. The Panthers will look to take control with a win in Game 5 on Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena.
"We’re going back home now," Bennett stated. "We’ve got our backs against the wall, so we’re going to go out there and give it everything we’ve got."
Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made several key saves late in the game, including some crucial stops that helped secure his team’s victory. "He made some big saves there late too," teammate Aleksander Barkov noted.
Looking Ahead
Despite being down two games to one heading into Game 5, Toronto still has plenty of life left in this series. They will need to regroup quickly if they want any chance at advancing past round one for just the second time since winning their last Stanley Cup title back in 1967.
"We can’t change what happened tonight," Matthews said. "We can only focus on tomorrow’s practice and getting ready for Thursday."
The Maple Leafs will look to bounce back from this tough loss when they face off against Florida again on Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena.
