The Nothing Phone 3 is expected to hit the market this summer, according to the company’s CEO, Carl Pei. In an interview, Pei revealed that the new phone will cost around £800 upon launch. This price increase is notable compared to previous models, as the Nothing Phone 2 launched in the UK at £580 and in the US at $600.
Reasons for Price Increase
Pei explained that the higher price point reflects a decision by Nothing to include premium materials and major performance upgrades. He stated:
"We’re not just trying to make a cheap phone. We want it [the software] really levels things up."
Development of Operating System
Pei also discussed the company’s efforts in developing its own operating system. He emphasized that this project has been in the works for several years and involves significant advancements:
- Custom OS Development: "We’ve been working on our own OS for several years now. It’s not just about making a custom UI or changing some icons around; we’re talking about building our own kernel from scratch."
Hardware Innovations
In addition to software, the company is focusing on developing its own hardware components, including chips and modems. Pei mentioned:
"We’ve got our first chip coming out soon. It’s going to be used in some of our future products."
Commitment to User Flexibility
Pei emphasized that Nothing is not solely committed to Android as an operating system. He wants users who buy one of their phones today to have the flexibility to switch between different platforms later if they choose to do so.
Strategic Focus
Pei highlighted that Nothing’s plans are more focused on creating unique experiences rather than competing directly with larger brands like Apple or Samsung, which have substantial resources. He noted:
"It makes it difficult for smaller companies like ours to compete head-on against them."
Future Outlook
Despite being primarily known as an accessories brand, Pei mentioned that Nothing will continue producing high-end smartphones. He believes there is still room in existing markets for consumers to find value beyond what larger manufacturers offer.
Overall, Nothing seems determined to push aggressively into the smartphone space, even though competition may seem fierce. Only time will tell whether this strategy will lead to long-term success.
