Brian Santiago Appointed New Director of Athletics at BYU

Brian Santiago, a longtime member of the Brigham Young University (BYU) athletic department, has been named the university’s new director of athletics. Santiago brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, having worked at BYU since 1997.

Career Overview

  • Early Career: Santiago began his career at BYU on the men’s basketball coaching staff.
  • Administrative Roles: He transitioned into administrative roles in 2011 and was appointed senior associate athletic director in 2008. He served in that position until becoming deputy athletic director under Tom Holmoe in 2017.
  • Oversight: As deputy AD, Santiago oversaw men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, sports marketing, and communications.

Athletic Background

Santiago is no stranger to college athletics, having played for Utah Valley University (UVU) after graduating from Provo High School, and later for Fresno State. His extensive experience will undoubtedly serve him well in his new role.

Santiago’s Vision

"I’m grateful for this opportunity," said Santiago regarding his appointment. He expressed his eagerness to work with coaches, student-athletes, and staff to continue building a strong and successful program.

Responsibilities as Director of Athletics

As the new director of athletics at BYU, Santiago will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing all aspects of the university’s athletic programs.
  • Managing budgets.
  • Hiring coaches and staff members.
  • Developing strategic plans for each sports team.
  • Ensuring compliance with NCAA regulations.
  • Promoting academic excellence among student-athletes.

Support from University Leadership

Santiago will work closely with other university administrators, including President Camille Mabey, who expressed her support, stating, "I am excited about Brian’s leadership skills which have been demonstrated through years of service here at BYU." She believes he has “the right combination” needed “to lead our department forward.”

Transition of Leadership

This appointment follows Tom Holmoe’s announcement earlier this year that he would be stepping down from his position effective June 30th, after nearly two decades leading Cougar Athletics. Holmoe had previously stated that it was time for him to move on but expressed confidence in the organization’s ability to transition effectively.

Looking Ahead

With Brian Santiago now taking over as Director of Athletics, it remains unclear what changes may come under his leadership. However, Cougar fans are eager to see the direction their beloved program takes next.

Only time will tell if Brian can meet the expectations set by previous leaders like Tom Holmoe, but one thing is clear: he has big shoes to fill.

For now, we wish him all the best and success during his tenure leading Cougar Athletics into a bright future ahead!
