Families File Criminal Complaint After Plane Crash

Families of the 179 people killed in a December plane crash have filed a new criminal complaint against 15 individuals, including South Korea’s transport minister and Jeju Air’s CEO, accusing them of professional negligence.

Call for Thorough Investigation

The bereaved relatives are demanding a more thorough investigation into the crash at Muan International Airport in southwestern South Korea. They stated, “It was not a simple accident. It was a major civic disaster caused by negligent management of preventable risks.”

Details of the Incident

  • The plane was carrying 181 people when it crashed last December, resulting in only two survivors.
  • South Korean authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash, which has not yet been determined.

Ongoing Investigations

Prior to this latest complaint, police had already opened an investigation and barred Jeju Air CEO Kim E-bae from leaving the country. Kim has denied any wrongdoing but admitted to failing to manage safety risks at his airline before the accident, which occurred on December 29 while flying from Seoul to Jeju Island.

High-Profile Accusations

In addition to Kim, several other high-profile figures are among those accused, including:

  • Transport Minister Noh Hyeong-ou: Oversees aviation safety regulations.
  • Lee Jae-hyun: President-elect candidate for the main opposition People Power Party and former head of the parliamentary committee overseeing transportation issues.
  • Park Young-sun: Former leader of the main opposition Democratic Party and current chairwoman of the parliamentary committee overseeing transportation issues.
  • Yoon Chang-jin: Former head of the state-run Incheon International Airport Corp.
  • Park Sung-min, Kang Min-soo, Lee Sang-moo, Choi Jang-won, Oh Seung-hwan: Board members of Incheon International Airport Corp.
  • Kim Hyun-gyu, Park Ji-yoon, Kwon Yong-seok, Lee Jae-hwan: Officials from the Ministry of Transportation, Land, Infrastructure & Oceans.
  • Jang Sung-hee, Yoo Jung-min, Choi Hyeon-jin, Han Tae-young, Jung Young-jae, Lim Ji-yoon: Inspectors from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of the Republic of Korea.

All individuals face charges related to professional negligence resulting in death or injury, according to the Gwangju District Prosecutors Office, which launched the probe last month following public outcry over the slow pace of the government’s response to the disaster’s aftermath.
