HMP Five Wells: A Hub for Sex Offenders

HMP Five Wells: A Hub for Sex Offenders

HMP Five Wells, a British prison that opened in 2022, has become a significant facility for sex offenders. Initially designed to house only those convicted of sexual crimes, it now has an integrated population with a high number of prisoners convicted of sexual offenses.

Key Statistics

  • According to Ministry of Justice data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, by March 2024, more than two-thirds (70%) of HMP Five Wells’ population had been convicted of a sexual offense.
  • This percentage is significantly higher than other prisons in the UK:
    • HMP Belmarsh: Approximately 52% of inmates convicted of sexual offenses.
    • HMP Whitemoor: Just over 36% of inmates convicted of sexual offenses.

Inmate Experiences

Former inmates have shared their experiences within the prison:

  • One individual recounted, "I spent all day locked in my cell. I started using spice because I didn’t know what else to do… It’s easier to get than food and drink." He noted that attacks on sex offenders were commonplace during his incarceration.

  • Another former inmate expressed concern about visiting family members due to the presence of child rapists nearby: "It makes my skin crawl. Rather than enjoying my visit, I’m looking at which prisoners are staring at her standing less than a metre away."

Deteriorating Conditions

The data indicates that conditions inside the prison are deteriorating rapidly:

  • Assaults increased by nearly 75% between January and March this year compared to the previous year.
  • Prisoner-on-prisoner attacks rose from 215 in February/March last year to 375 in the same period this year.
  • Self-harm incidents also surged from an average quarterly level before integration to significantly higher levels post-integration.

These statistics raise serious concerns about the safety and well-being of both prisoners and staff within HMP Five Wells.
