Honda Delays $15 Billion Electric Vehicle Project in Ontario

Honda Motor Co. has postponed its $15 billion electric vehicle (EV) project in Alliston, Ontario, by two years. The automaker is currently evaluating whether the financial commitments from federal and provincial governments towards electric vehicles are adequate.

Project Overview

The project encompasses:

  • A new EV battery plant.
  • A retooled vehicle assembly line within an existing factory complex located on Highway #9 north of Alliston, which currently produces Civic sedans.

Government Support

Honda’s project is set to receive a total of $5 billion in government support, which includes:

  • $2.5 billion from the federal government via investment tax credits.
  • $2.5 billion from Ontario through construction and other financial supports.

According to parliamentary budget officer Yves Giroux, total government support for 13 Canadian EV projects announced between October 8, 2020, and April 26, 2024, could reach up to $52.5 billion, surpassing the companies’ investments by 14%. The breakdown of this support is as follows:

  • Federal government: up to $31.4 billion.
  • Provincial governments: up to $21.1 billion.

Recent Commitments

In recent months, Ottawa has committed over $20 billion towards various clean energy initiatives through budgets and economic statements since last September. The Parliamentary Budget Office estimates that restoring these commitments would cost taxpayers more than $11 billion from now until 2030 if reinstated.

Company Statement

A spokesperson for Honda did not provide specific reasons for the delay but stated, "We will continue working with our partners on this initiative."

Michael Kneebone, a spokesman for Honda Canada, reiterated in an email response regarding the delays or changes related to the planned EV manufacturing facility at the Alliston plant, "We do not have any further information regarding potential changes or updates related to our previously announced plans."

This project was initially announced last year alongside Toyota Motor Corp.’s plans for an adjacent battery production facility at its nearby Woodstock, Ontario, plant.
