Ontario Government’s Payments to The Beer Store

Ontario Government's Payments to The Beer Store

The Ontario government has paid out almost two-thirds of the $225 million it promised to The Beer Store, a privately-owned company that sells beer and other beverages in the province.

Payment Details

  • The government has disbursed $130.5 million to The Beer Store as part of the agreement.
  • This leaves a balance of nearly $95 million due by the end of the year.

Agreement Overview

  • The payment is part of a deal made in 2020 between The Beer Store and Ontario taxpayers.
  • Under this agreement:
    • At least 300 locations must remain open until December 31, 2025.
    • After this date, there will be no restrictions on shutdowns.

Current Situation

  • Several closures have already been announced across Ontario, including in cities such as Oakville and Toronto.
  • There is no confirmation from The Beer Store regarding potential further or full-scale shutdowns once their deal expires in four months.

Future Considerations

When asked about potential job losses following the expiration of the deal, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy stated:

"They have to make business decisions."

Bethlenfalvy also highlighted that consumers now have more options for purchasing alcohol:

  • Alcohol is available in grocery stores.
  • Various outlets, including the LCBO (a state-run liquor store chain owned by the province), offer more choices for consumers.
