Former FBI Director James Comey was interviewed by the US Secret Service after he shared and then deleted a social media post that Republicans alleged was an incitement to violence against President Donald Trump. Comey voluntarily participated in the questioning at the law enforcement agency’s Washington DC headquarters and was not held in custody, according to sources.
Incident Overview
- The incident began when Comey posted on Instagram a photo of seashells that spelled out "8647".
- The number 86 is a slang term that can mean "to reject" or "to get rid of," and has more recently been used to imply "kill." Trump is the 47th US president.
Reactions
-
Donald Trump: In an interview with Fox News, Trump claimed that Comey was calling for him to be killed, stating, “If you’re going out into public like this guy did… He knew exactly what that meant. A child knows what that means."
-
Tucker Carlson: The Fox News host tweeted, “James Comey just threatened @realDonaldTrump with murder," accusing the media of bias and calling for justice.
-
Elon Musk: Musk expressed outrage on Twitter, saying, “This is insane! What kind of sick person does this? Threatening our President?! This must be stopped!! We need justice now!!!"
-
Mike Pompeo: The former Secretary of State tweeted about Comey’s alleged death threats against the President, stating, “That’s right – death threats… Against America’s Commander-In-Chief while traveling abroad representing our great nation.” He urged Americans, regardless of party affiliation, to stand against hate speech and domestic terrorism.
Investigation Status
A spokesperson for the Secret Service declined to comment on whether an investigation had been opened regarding Trump’s claims about Pompeo making death threats against him earlier this year during his trip abroad. Pompeo has denied making any threats towards President Biden or any other political figure prior to leaving office last year.
