Kyle Larson Prepares for Double-Duty at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Kyle Larson is gearing up for a challenging double-duty event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he will compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 31. As the NASCAR Cup Series points leader, Larson has been honing his IndyCar skills since his debut last year, where he finished 18th after a pit-road speeding penalty.

Larson’s Approach to IndyCar Racing

"I’ve been working on my IndyCar skills since last year," Larson stated. "I’ve got to be more aggressive and take more risks than I do in stock cars."

Larson will be driving an Arrow McLaren entry alongside teammate Felix Rosenqvist, who recently secured pole position at Barber Motorsports Park. Rosenqvist believes that Larson’s stock car experience will be beneficial in navigating the high-speed challenges of IndyCar racing.

"I think Kyle’s background is going to help him with handling high-speed corners and navigating complex tracks like this one," Rosenqvist commented.

Challenges with the Hybrid System

Despite his confidence, Larson acknowledges the difficulties posed by the hybrid system in INDYCAR cars, which can make them harder to drive and more susceptible to crashes. He has already experienced two crashes during practice this week.

"It’s just really hard when you’re trying not to crash your car," Larson explained. "It takes a lot of focus."

Managing Fatigue

Concerns have been raised about Larson’s ability to complete both races without adequate rest or sleep. However, he remains optimistic about his performance.

"It would be nice if I could get some rest before we go back out there for the second race," Larson said. "But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen."

Since March, Larson has been racing continuously, with only one day off during Easter weekend, which he spent fishing with family members visiting from California.

"I’m just trying not to let fatigue get me down right now because it would be easy to give up, but I’m not ready yet," Larson concluded.
