Nationals Defeat Orioles 10-6 Following Manager's Firing

The Washington Nationals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 10-6 on Saturday, just hours after the Orioles announced they had fired manager Brandon Hyde. Hyde had led the Orioles into the postseason in both 2023 and 2024, but this year’s team struggled, starting with a record of 15-28 and sitting in last place in the AL East. General manager Mike Elias decided to make a change.

Game Highlights

The decision to fire Hyde did not pay off immediately for Baltimore. The Nationals’ leadoff hitter, CJ Abrams, hustled to second base on a routine single. Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins misjudged a fly ball that soared over his head, allowing Washington to score four runs before Baltimore recorded its first out.

  • Key Plays:
    • Luis Garcia Jr.’s two-run single was the key blow in Washington’s six-run first inning.
    • The inning featured:
      • Two doubles
      • One triple
      • All six players who batted in the inning reached home plate.

This marked only the fourth instance where every player leading off an inning scored since records began being tracked in the National League. Other instances occurred on:

  • April 18 against the Atlanta Braves (5)
  • June 17 against the Chicago Cubs (5)
  • September 16 against the St. Louis Cardinals (4)

Mullins has made some brilliant catches this season, but his poor read on Keibert Ruiz’s liner resulted in a double that kept the merry-go-round turning for the Nationals’ big first-inning rally.

Washington has won four of five games against the Orioles this year, outscoring them by twelve runs, including winning three straight times at Camden Yards. This clinched the Nationals’ first season series win against the Orioles since taking three of four from them in August/September 2018.
