Mountaineers Rout Rams in Softball Tournament

The Mountaineers, the top-seeded team in their tournament, dominated the eighth-seeded Rams with a strong performance from Elena Ritchey. She hit two home runs and drove in five runs.

Ritchey’s teammates also contributed to the win:

  • Cayley Poorbaugh hit a 2-run home run.
  • Bena Barna launched a solo shot.
  • Sam Walker added two hits and two RBIs.
  • Isabella Philip provided a hit and two RBIs.

Walker’s pitching was equally impressive as she tossed a no-hitter and struck out seven batters.

In another game, Katy Kovacs helped her team advance when she singled and stole second base. A misplayed ball off Hayden Sheeler’s bat allowed Kovacs to score, lifting the second-seeded Panthers over the seventh-seeded Rockets.

Payton Maddy pitched well for Rockwood but ultimately fell short of victory against the Panthers, led by Emma Brown, who drove in one run with an infield single that plated Rachel Shaffer. Shaffer reached base via an error on first baseman Emily Saylor’s throw back to pitcher Maddy after Shaffer’s steal attempt at third base was caught by catcher Kaitlyn Hixenbaugh. This sequence allowed Shaffer to score, making it 3-1 in favor of the Panthers going into their final at-bat against Rockwood. The Panthers held on to win 3-2, with Maddy throwing all six innings, striking out ten batters without issuing any walks and giving up only five total hits.

The fourth-seeded Ramblers also won their game against the fifth-seeded Cougars, thanks in part to Rylee Baer, who hit a 3-run home run.
