"The idea that you need sentience before you can build safe autonomous weapons is wrong-headed… If we were going down this route then we would never develop any kind of autonomy at all…"

He adds, "The problem isn’t what happens when these things wake up; it’s what happens when people start believing these things have feelings."

Prof. Seth suggests that life might be essential for creating sentient beings, referring to biological systems as "meat-based computers" in contrast to electronic ones. He notes that brains differ from computers because it is challenging to separate what they do from who they are.

Innovations in Human-AI Collaboration

Lenore Blum has been working on creating an internal language called Brainish with her husband, Manuel Blum, since 2018. Brainish allows a machine named Lemur to connect with more sensory inputs through cameras and sensors for vision and touch, respectively.
