Aid to Palestinians in Gaza

Aid to Palestinians in Gaza

Aid to Palestinians in Gaza began flowing on Monday, a day after Israeli strikes killed at least 52 people in the territory, according to a US-backed group handling the aid despite objections from the United Nations.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation reported that truckloads of food had been delivered to its hubs, and distribution to Palestinians had commenced. The organization stated, "We are working around the clock to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. More trucks with aid will be delivered tomorrow, with the flow of aid increasing each day."

Israeli Aid Delivery Plan

Israel has advocated for an alternative aid delivery plan, citing the need to prevent Hamas from seizing aid. However, Israel’s allies have pressured the country to allow humanitarian assistance into Gaza.

  • Last week, Israel began permitting a trickle of humanitarian aid into Gaza after blocking all goods since early March.
  • This decision came amid mounting international pressure regarding the conditions inside Gaza.

New Aid System

The new aid delivery system was established by Qatar and other donors with US backing, and it is being managed by private companies rather than government agencies or international organizations like UNRWA, which typically handles such deliveries.

Concerns from UN Officials

UN officials have expressed concerns about the effectiveness of this new system in delivering aid where it is most needed, especially since many Gazans rely on UNRWA for basic necessities such as food and medicine.

Stefano Severei, spokesman for UNRWA operations director Matthias Schmale, stated:

  • "This new mechanism does not replace our existing work."
  • "It is not clear how much food will reach families through this channel."
  • "We are concerned about how these goods will reach families who need them most."
