Inmates Re-Arrested After Escape from Orleans Justice Center

Three more inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center jail in New Orleans earlier this month have been re-arrested, authorities announced Monday. The men were apprehended in two different states.

Details of the Arrests

  • One inmate was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by local police.
  • Two others were arrested in Walker County, Texas, by officials there.

According to Louisiana State Police, the escapees apprehended are:

  • Lenton Vanburen
  • Leo Tate
  • Jermaine Donald

These new arrests bring the total number of recaptured inmates to eight. Five other escapees are already back behind bars:

  • Dkenan Dennis
  • Corey Boyd
  • Gary C. Price
  • Kendell Myles

Additional Charges

Robert Moody is also being held without bond at St. Tammany Parish Jail for charges related to armed robbery with a firearm. This charge carries a potential sentence of up to life imprisonment if convicted. Moody’s arrest came just days before his scheduled sentencing hearing for attempted first-degree murder. He pleaded guilty last year but has yet to be sentenced due to delays caused by COVID-19 pandemic-related court closures.

The Escape Incident

The original escape occurred during an audacious break-out involving several security breaches at the jail that allowed 10 inmates — including Moody — to slip out of their cells on July 6th.

Contributing Factors

  • Faulty cell doors
  • Inadequate surveillance cameras

These issues contributed to the incident, which left authorities scrambling as they searched for those who had escaped through a ventilation shaft into an adjacent building. The inmates then made their way onto Canal Street before disappearing into traffic.

Reactions

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the incident as “a serious incident.” Governor John Bel Edwards called it “unacceptable.”
