Mayor's Environment Expo Returns to City Hall

The 36th Mayor’s Environment Expo took place at City Hall from June 2 to 5. The event showcased student-led sustainability initiatives aimed at preserving and maintaining Calgary’s environmental future.

This year, the expo served as a platform for students to connect with professionals, host exhibits, and attend workshops centered around conserving and protecting Calgary’s natural environment. Canadian Environment Week coincided with the expo, highlighting Canada’s environmental achievements while encouraging participation in conservation efforts.

Key Highlights

  • Exhibits and Workshops:
    • Over 38 exhibits
    • 16 virtual workshops
    • 100 in-person sessions

The Mayor’s Environment Expo has been promoting Calgarian youth learning sustainable practices for their city’s future for the past three decades.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek expressed her amazement at the growth she has seen over time, noting that remarkable students consistently attend each year, "super focused on protecting the planet" for future generations.

Calgary schools played a significant role in this year’s success, largely due to collaboration between EcoSchools Canada and the Alberta Council for Environmental Education. Teacher Kelly Craigue of Apostles of Jesus School remarked on the inspiring connections students made with like-minded individuals who share a passion for caring about the environment.

"The diverse selection of presentations ensured there was something engaging for every student," Craigue said. "It made it easy for them to find programs matching their interests."
