The B.C. Lions are moving forward with plans to host a street party concert in front of B.C. Place for their season opener against the Edmonton Elks, despite initial concerns about safety following a recent tragedy.
The team had considered canceling the event due to fears that it could attract large crowds and create logistical challenges, but after reassessing their options, they decided to proceed with caution.
Key Statements
- Duane Vienneau, president of the Lions, stated, "We can’t have two separate events. It would create logistical challenges and potentially lead to congestion around entrances to B.C. Place."
- Vienneau noted that fans often prioritize live music over other activities, so organizers will focus on hosting one event in front of B.C. Place while ensuring fan safety and experience remain top priorities.
Event Details
- Halftime Performance: Snoop Dogg is scheduled to perform at halftime during Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Elks at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 4:45 p.m.
- Ticket Availability: Tickets are selling rapidly ahead of Saturday’s game; fewer than 1,000 remain available as of Wednesday afternoon.
- Early Entry: Fans who want early entry into B.C. Place can arrive starting at 4:45 p.m., just hours before kickoff.
Logistics
- Organizers will block off part of Robson and Beatty streets as needed due to the large crowd expected for Snoop Dogg’s pre-game concert inside B.C. Place.
- Vienneau emphasized, "We’re working closely with city officials and police services. We’ll do everything we can within our power limits."
Additional Plans
- The team has announced plans for a post-game fireworks display if they win or lose by more than three points in overtime or double overtime on Saturday night.
- There will also be an autograph session from players after each home game this season.
