Angus Collins is pushing the limits of human endurance as he attempts to become the first person to row solo around Great Britain. The 2,000-mile journey will take him 60 days, but Collins is confident he can complete it in just 50 days if everything goes smoothly.
Preparation
Collins has prepared extensively for this challenge:
- He has built a custom-made boat designed specifically for navigating British waters.
- The boat is loaded with two months’ worth of supplies, allowing him to focus on rowing without worrying about running out of food or water.
Challenges Ahead
The route will be fraught with challenges, including:
- Unpredictable weather patterns
- Difficult sea conditions
Despite these concerns, Collins remains undeterred. He expressed his confidence in an interview, stating, "I’m feeling good about my chances. I’ve done all my research and I’m confident in my abilities."
Strategy for Success
To stay focused throughout the long hours at sea, Collins plans to:
- Take eight-hour breaks after each period of rowing.
- Use this time to rest and recharge before getting back on the water.
Collins’s determination is evident in his words: "I’m ready for this challenge." With a strong boat and a clear plan, Angus Collins sets off on an adventure that could make history—if he can overcome the many hurdles ahead.
Current Conditions
As we speak with Angus by phone from his boat off Plymouth Hoe near Devonport Dockyard, where it was built by Plymouth-based company Atlantic Rowing Boats Ltd., there’s no hint of anything other than calm seas ahead. However, forecasters warn that gales could hit within hours.
Historical Context
Last year, American adventurer Alex Bellini took nearly three weeks longer than expected to complete a similar crossing due to bad weather, which forced him into sheltered bays. His journey around the island nation, which stretches over 800 miles, included several stops at various ports while waiting out storms and fog that made navigation hazardous.
Optimism for the Journey
Despite the challenges, Angus remains optimistic about completing the circuit within the next fortnight. He stated, “I’m feeling good about my chances,” and when asked how long he thinks it will take to complete the entire journey, he replied simply, “50 days max.”
