Body of Missing Quebec Hiker Found in Adirondacks

A body found Saturday in the Adirondacks has been identified as that of a 22-year-old Quebec hiker, Leo Dufour, who went missing last November.

Discovery of Remains

  • The remains were discovered off Allen Mountain trail in Essex County by a hiking party.
  • Forest rangers, a DEC investigator, and New York State Police responded to the location to investigate.

Identification Process

  • Authorities confirmed the identification through dental records and other means.
  • Dufour was reported missing after failing to return from a one-day hike on November 30th.
  • His car was found covered in snow at a trailhead near his intended route, complicating search efforts due to recent snowfall.

Search Efforts

  • An initial multi-agency search effort launched in December continued into January but was put on hold until spring.
  • Conditions improved in April, allowing officials to resume searching for Dufour.

Closure for Family

"We are relieved that we can finally bring closure to Leo’s family," said officials from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
