California Governor Gavin Newsom has requested that the Trump administration rescind its order to deploy 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles, labeling the action as an “unlawful” and “serious breach of state sovereignty.”
Lack of Consultation
Newsom stated that he was not consulted by the White House prior to President Donald Trump’s announcement on Saturday night regarding the troop deployment. Federal law mandates coordination between governors and defense secretaries before troops can be deployed in support of civil authorities during emergencies or disasters.
Concerns Over Violence
The governor expressed concerns about the potential escalation of violence with the involvement of more military personnel in policing protests. He noted that police had already used force against protesters, despite having sufficient numbers of officers present at earlier demonstrations.
“While we continue working with local authorities and law enforcement agencies to maintain public safety, we will not stand idly by as our sovereignty is threatened,” Newsom stated.
Response from Trump’s Office
As of Sunday, Trump’s office had not publicly responded to Newsom’s request for the revocation of the National Guard deployment order.
