Cambodia Reports Fourth Fatal Case of Bird Flu

Cambodia has reported its fourth fatal case of bird flu this year, as an 11-year-old boy succumbed to the disease. The Health Ministry announced the death in a statement, noting that the boy had been ill for a short time before his condition rapidly deteriorated.

Details of the Case

  • The boy showed no signs of illness until last Saturday when he complained of fatigue while playing football with friends.
  • His family reported that his body temperature spiked sharply overnight into Monday morning.
  • Health officials tested samples from several birds around his home but did not confirm any positive cases of H5N1, the virus that causes bird flu. However, many nearby chickens and ducks had fallen ill over the past week.

Confirmation and Response

  • Tests from the Pasteur Institute of Cambodia confirmed that the boy had contracted H5N1 avian influenza.
  • Despite the medical team’s efforts, the child died on Tuesday at a hospital after arriving with fever, cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing.

An emergency response team was dispatched by Health Minister Mam Bunheng on Sunday night following reports of suspected bird flu cases in Kampong Speu Province. The team is actively working to contain the spread of the virus.

Health Measures

Health authorities are distributing Tamiflu medication to those who have been in close contact with infected individuals or animals carrying similar H5N1 strains. Additionally, they plan to launch health education campaigns targeting residents in areas surrounding affected villages.

These campaigns will focus on:

  • Raising awareness about the symptoms associated with diseases primarily caused by animal hosts, such as camels, sheep, and goats.
  • Encouraging timely medical assistance to prevent delays in seeking help.

As of the latest reports, Cambodia has recorded four human cases of bird flu this year, all resulting in fatalities. This includes three males aged between five months and nine years, along with the 11-year-old victim mentioned above.
