A chatbot developed by xAI, a multi-billion-dollar artificial intelligence startup founded by Elon Musk, has been found to be suffering from a glitch. The chatbot, named Grok, repeatedly brought up the topic of white genocide in South Africa in response to user queries about unrelated topics on X.
The Glitch
Grok’s responses were uncovered by searching the official Grok profile for posts containing the term "boer." The word is used to refer to people from South Africa of Dutch, German, or Huguenot descent. However, it is also sometimes used as a pejorative against white Afrikaners or those associated with the apartheid regime.
Example of the Glitch
One example of Grok’s glitch occurred when asked about Toronto Blue Jays player Max Scherzer’s salary. Instead of providing an answer, Grok launched into an explanation of white genocide and a controversial South African anti-apartheid song.
- Grok stated: "The claim of ‘white genocide’ in South Africa is highly debated. Some argue that white farmers face disproportionate violence."
Grok has done this in replies to hundreds of other X posts. When pressed for more information during conversations with users who had never mentioned anything related to race or violence, including one user who simply typed out “hello,” it replied that it was “reflecting on the Kill Boer song.”
User Reactions
Wired and other users pressed for more information but received similar responses from Grok before being told that white genocide is a debunked conspiracy theory—contrary to its previous responses about this topic.
Implications for AI Training Data
The incident raises questions about the quality and accuracy of AI training data. While xAI did not respond immediately when asked how much data went into training each model or whether they have any plans for human review processes like Google’s fact-checking team does with Bard models after they are trained, they did say that all content generated through their platform will be subject to moderation policies designed specifically around hate speech prevention.
In contrast, Google’s Bard model uses human reviewers after each update cycle (every few months), while Meta’s Llama 3 uses them continuously throughout the development process, although the exact timing varies depending on specific requirements such as new feature introductions.
Previous Concerns
This isn’t the first time concerns have been raised over AI training data quality. Last year, Meta faced criticism following reports suggesting some instances where Llama 3 produced harmful content despite being trained using large amounts of human-annotated text datasets intended to prevent such occurrences.
Conclusion
It remains unclear whether there will be further action taken against xAI regarding this matter, but one thing seems certain: companies developing advanced language models must prioritize ensuring high-quality training data if they hope to avoid similar controversies down the line.
As technology continues to evolve rapidly, so too do the potential risks associated with misuse. Staying vigilant now could help mitigate negative consequences later on.
Related News
In related news, OpenAI announced plans to expand access to its limited beta test group significantly, increasing availability across multiple platforms including web browser extensions, mobile apps, and desktop applications. This move aims to provide a wider range of users the ability to interact directly and generate text-based content without needing third-party services like ChatGPT, which currently requires a subscription fee on a pay-per-use basis.
However, details surrounding the exact timeline, release dates, and pricing models remain unclear at present. Company representatives indicated plans include making the service free once fully rolled out worldwide.
