David Beckham to be Awarded Knighthood

David Beckham to be Awarded Knighthood

David Beckham is set to be awarded a knighthood in the upcoming Birthday Honours List, according to reports. The former England star is expected to receive the honour next week, although Buckingham Palace has yet to officially confirm the news.

Reform UK Faces Internal Turmoil

The announcement of Beckham’s knighthood comes amid internal turmoil within Reform UK, following the sudden resignation of party chairman Zia Yusuf. Mr. Yusuf resigned after a clash with fellow MP Neil Hudson regarding the potential ban on wearing burkas in public places.

  • Neil Hudson’s Position: Called for a ban on full-face veils such as burkas and niqabs.
  • Zia Yusuf’s Opposition: Expressed disagreement with the proposed ban.

Mr. Yusuf’s departure has led to accusations that he was dismissed for opposing Nigel Farage’s views on immigration policy. Farage described Yusuf as "enormously talented" and expressed regret over his resignation, stating, "I’m genuinely sorry that you feel you need to leave." However, he also accused Hudson of attempting to undermine him within the party, saying, "Neil Hudson is one of those people who thinks I’m not good enough for this country because I don’t agree with him on immigration."

Leadership Response

Reform UK’s leader, Richard Tice, denied that Mr. Yusuf was sacked and expressed a desire for him to remain in the party. He remarked, "Zia was an excellent chairman but we are moving forward."

Ongoing Tensions

This conflict occurs amid ongoing tensions between Reform UK and its predecessor, the Brexit Party, particularly over immigration policy.

  • In 2019, Nigel Farage resigned as leader of the Brexit Party after winning only one seat in Parliament, despite securing over 2 million votes across Britain.
  • Following disagreements with some members about standing candidates against Conservative MPs who opposed Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal, Farage formed Reform UK.

Currently, Reform UK has two MPs: Neil Hamilton and Richard Tice. Additionally, another candidate won a seat in last year’s local elections but lost it earlier this month after defecting back to Labour before losing her council seat in May’s local elections.

It is understood that Zia Yusuf had been planning his exit from Reform UK prior to making public comments about Nigel Farage’s views on immigration policy earlier this month.
