Elon Musk and Donald Trump are at odds over the former president’s proposed legislation, with Musk calling it a "disgusting abomination" and Trump insisting that it is one of the greatest bills ever presented to Congress.
Overview of the Bill
The disagreement centers on a bill that would provide $1.3 trillion in new spending for fiscal 2024, which includes:
- $1.2 trillion for discretionary programs such as:
- Defense
- Education
- Veterans’ benefits
- $130 billion for mandatory programs such as:
- Medicaid
- Food stamps
Trump’s Perspective
Trump has been touting his plan as a major achievement, claiming that he has delivered more than any other president in history. He stated that Musk should have turned against him months ago when he was still running for re-election:
"I think Elon should have turned against me months ago," Trump said during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. "I think he should have done something about this disgusting abomination."
Musk’s Response
Musk responded to Trump’s comments on Twitter, stating:
"This is not what I meant by ‘big beautiful bill.’"
Concerns from Lawmakers
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX)
Sen. John Cornyn expressed concerns about the bill’s promises during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper:
- "I’m not sure how we’re going to deliver all of those promises."
- He emphasized the need to be careful about what is promised to voters, stating that failure to deliver could lead to disappointment.
Cornyn acknowledged Trump’s positive intentions but stressed the importance of delivering on promises:
"We need to make sure that we’re doing something meaningful here. We need to make sure that we’re addressing some of these big issues like our debt crisis."
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX)
Rep. Chip Roy also expressed frustration with the bill during an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo:
- "I reluctantly voted for this thing because I thought it could have been better than what was delivered by the House."
- He acknowledged some of Musk’s points regarding deficit reduction and spending restraint but ultimately voted against the measure due to its lack of savings provisions:
"’Elon has points’ regarding addressing deficit reduction and spending restraint. But this thing doesn’t do anything about either one."
