Election Dispute in Quebec Riding Resolved After Recount

A special ballot error led to a temporary change in the outcome of a Quebec riding, but the seat has now been returned to its original winner. Preliminary results showed that the Liberals had won Terrebonne by a narrow margin. However, after the results were validated, they temporarily flipped to the Bloc Québécois.

The dispute was resolved after a recount was conducted, which returned the seat to the Liberals. This decision was met with an unusual incident when a Bloc voter reported seeing her mail-in ballot returned to her.

Elections Canada investigated and confirmed an error on an envelope used for mailing a special ballot from Terrebonne. The agency’s spokesperson, Matthew McKenna, stated that "the result of the riding is final."

According to Elections Canada, information about judicial review is available on their website. McKenna added that any disputes would have to be brought through legal means: "The Canadian includes information about how one can apply for judicial review,” he said. “But it would have to be brought through legal means."
