Eric Spofford Arrested for Alleged Conspiracy to Stalk Journalists

Former Granite Recovery Centers CEO Eric Spofford was arrested on Friday for allegedly orchestrating a conspiracy to stalk journalists in retaliation for a New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) investigation that accused him of multiple instances of sexual misconduct while he led the recovery centers.

Background

  • Spofford denied the allegations and later sued NHPR for defamation, claiming that the investigation damaged his reputation and led to financial losses.
  • A New Hampshire judge dismissed his lawsuit in 2023, ruling there was no evidence to support his claims of defamation.

Allegations

Prosecutors allege that Spofford devised a plan starting in March 2022 and continuing until at least May 2022 to harass and terrorize three individuals associated with NHPR:

  • Author Taylor Quimby
  • Quimby’s wife
  • Senior editor Jason Moon

According to prosecutors, Spofford paid $20,000 in cash, either directly or indirectly through others involved with him.

Instructions to Co-Conspirators

The alleged co-conspirators were reportedly instructed on how to target their victims using:

  • Large rocks
  • Bricks that would cause damage upon impact

They were advised not to use firearms to avoid fatalities during this period.

In an apparent attempt to avoid implicating himself or other co-conspirators if caught by law enforcement, one conspirator allegedly instructed others involved in the plot:

"If you’re caught by law enforcement then tell police you were hired by someone named ‘Tucker.’"

Next Steps

Spofford is scheduled for arraignment on Monday at U.S. District Court in Concord before Judge Paul Barbadoro.
