Families File Complaint Over December Plane Crash in South Korea

Families of victims from December’s devastating plane crash in South Korea have filed a complaint against 15 individuals they believe are responsible for the disaster that resulted in the deaths of all but two of the 181 people on board.

The complaint was submitted to the Jeonnam Provincial Police agency in southern South Korea on Tuesday, with 72 bereaved relatives signing the document. Those cited in the complaint include:

Key Individuals Named

  • Transport Minister: Noh Hyeong-ouk
  • President of Jeju Air: Kim Tae-won
  • Chief Operating Officer: Park Sung-taek (airline maintenance)
  • Director General: Lee Seung-jin (Civil Aviation Safety Authority – CASA)
  • Head Manager: Yoo Young-sik (Muan International Airport)
  • Director General: Cho Joon-ho (air traffic controllers)
  • Head Manager: Song Jae-gyu (Muan International Airport)

Accountability

The complaint holds accountable:

  • Airline officials responsible for maintenance and safety issues.
  • Airport staff managing facilities.
  • Air traffic controllers who were expected to prevent bird strikes prior to takeoff.

Family Statements

Kim Dae-hye, a relative of one of the victims, expressed the family’s frustration:

"We can’t help feeling deep anger and despair over the fact there has been little progress. Four months after our loved ones were taken away from us without warning."

Lawyer Lee So-Ah indicated that she expects police to formally brief the families, as her clients had inquired about potential legal consequences following the submission of the complaint—something that had not been previously promised by investigators.
