Firefighters responded to a blaze at a data center in Hillsboro, Oregon, leased by Elon Musk’s X. The incident occurred at the Hillsboro Technology Park.
Incident Details
- The fire was first reported by local news outlet KOIN 6 News.
- Firefighters arrived at 10:21 AM and found a room filled with batteries involved in the fire.
- The flames had not spread beyond that room, but it was heavily filled with smoke when firefighters entered.
Impact on Operations
- There is currently no information on whether server operations were impacted by the incident, according to WIRED’s request for comment from X.
- X operates two remaining data centers in Portland and Atlanta, having previously operated three data centers in Sacramento, Portland, and Atlanta before Elon Musk’s acquisition.
Recent Changes to Infrastructure
- In 2022, around Christmas Eve, Musk shut down X’s data center in Sacramento as part of cost-cutting efforts.
- Over six months later, the company relocated more than 2,737 server racks from Sacramento to its remaining two locations.
- X has also expanded its presence within existing buildings near Portland to accommodate additional servers.
Additional Information
- It is unclear how many other companies share space at the Hillsboro facility or what level of operating support Digital Realty provides.
- A spokesperson for Digital Realty did not respond immediately to WIRED’s request for comment.
- WIRED has reached out to multiple sources who work at or near the facility, but they declined interviews due to fear of retaliation.
