Gators Players Face Surgery and Recovery

Gators Players Face Surgery and Recovery

Four University of Florida football players will undergo medical procedures this spring, as announced by the team. The players include:

  • Jake Slaughter (starting center) and Knijeah Harris (offensive lineman), both expected to have surgeries.

    • Slaughter’s injury is more serious, requiring a longer recovery period, and he will be out for the entire spring season.
    • Harris’s surgery may allow him to return sooner than Slaughter.
  • Aidan Mizell (receiver) will receive platelet-rich plasma injections in both knees following a recent knee debridement procedure. Mizell is expected to be ready for action in 3-6 weeks.

  • Treyaun Webb (running back) had surgical material removed from his tibia, which was fractured and repaired last fall. Webb is not yet cleared for contact but could potentially return by August 30th.

The team stated, "We’re taking it one day at a time," regarding the recoveries of their injured players. The Gators are eager to have their injured players back on the field but are also being cautious with their recoveries.

Other Injuries and Recoveries

Several other Gators football players are also dealing with injuries this offseason:

  • J.J. McCarthy (quarterback) is recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the 2023 season finale against Florida State. He expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, "I’m feeling good," and expects to be fully recovered by August 30th when UF opens its regular-season schedule against Utah State.

  • Gervon Dexter Sr. (defensive tackle) missed most of last season due to an ACL tear suffered during training camp. He reported, "I’m feeling good," and anticipates being ready by August 30th.

  • Will Campbell Jr. (offensive lineman) missed most of last season due to right shoulder labrum repair surgery. His recovery timeline remains uncertain, but teammates are optimistic about his chances of returning sooner than expected. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall mentioned, "He’ll probably come off (the PUP list) early if everything goes well."

Spring Practice Overview

The Gators’ depth chart remains fluid heading into spring practice, which begins Monday afternoon under head coach Billy Napier. Several positions are still up for grabs, including:

  1. Quarterbacks: J.J. McCarthy vs. Tyler Burke vs. Noah Sturdevant
  2. Running Backs: Treyaun Webb vs. Trevor Danielson vs. Trey Benson III vs. Jaylen Robinson
  3. Wide Receivers: Ricky Pearsall vs. Xzavier Henderson vs. Aidan Mizell vs. Marcus Allen
  4. Tight Ends: Kyle Pittman vs. Dante Zanders

The coaching staff will evaluate each player individually throughout March while also conducting position drills starting Tuesday morning. The Gators are looking forward to competing at full strength next fall.
