Georgia Tech’s baseball season came to a close on Sunday with an 11-9 loss to Ole Miss in the Oxford Regional. This defeat marked the end of head coach Danny Hall’s tenure, a position he announced would be his last earlier this spring.
Coach Hall’s Reflections
Hall expressed more concern about how this year’s team was cut short rather than his own personal journey as a college head coach ending. He stated, "I’m more focused on how I feel about this year’s team’s run being cut short."
Game Summary
The game began with strong performances from Kent Schmidt and Kyle Lodise, who hit back-to-back home runs, giving Georgia Tech a 3-0 lead before Ole Miss came to bat. However, Ole Miss quickly responded in their first at-bat against Jaylen Paden, scoring five runs on six hits:
- Luke Hill started with an RBI single.
- Isaac Humphrey followed with a three-run homer.
- Hayden Federico added an RBI single, ending Paden’s outing after just one-third of an inning.
Carson Ballard replaced Paden but faced four batters without recording any outs, walking two and allowing one hit. Riley Stanford then entered for Tech but walked both men he faced before leaving due to injury. Connor Chicoli closed out that inning without further damage, despite loading the bases.
The Rebels added another run via a sacrifice fly from Humphrey, making it 6-3 heading into the second inning. Georgia Tech left the bases loaded without scoring. Vahn Lackey reached base via error and later drove home a run with Carson Kerce’s double, narrowing the score to 6-4.
Back-to-back solo homers by Drew Burress and Kent Schmidt tied the game at 6-all midway through the fourth inning. Caleb Daniel delivered a clutch performance, hitting a go-ahead double down the right field line and later adding an insurance tally with a 2-RBI single in the sixth.
After tying the game twice, the Rebels rallied, taking advantage of two-out RISP singles from Judd Utermark and Mitchell Sanford, regaining the lead.
Georgia Tech responded immediately with a go-ahead RBI single from Caleb Daniel, but Ole Miss countered, leveling the playing field at 9-all thanks to Will Furniss’ RBI single with two outs.
Closing Moments
Mccausland pitched the final two frames, keeping the Jacket offense quiet, while Spencer closed the door, securing the win for Ole Miss and the series victory over Georgia Tech.
