Google I/O 2025: Key Highlights and Innovations

Google I/O, the annual conference for software developers, kicked off on Tuesday with Chief Executive Sundar Pichai delivering the keynote address. The event comes at a time when Alphabet’s Google stock remains volatile, having dropped about 12% in 2025. The stock price was relatively stable on Tuesday, trading at $167.29 as of 1 p.m. Eastern time. Investors can watch the conference live online.

AI Overviews and Gemini Model

Last year’s Google I/O saw Alphabet Inc.’s subsidiary announce plans to release AI Overviews – formerly known as Search Generative Experience – to all users in early May. This move followed a mid-2024 rollout of AI Overviews in the U.S., where conversational summaries now top links for many search queries.

The AI Overviews system relies on Alphabet’s Gemini artificial intelligence model. Analyst Daniel Ives of Wedbush noted that:

"Google is fighting back against AI disruption through its Gemini services that go across its entire portfolio including search."

He added that Gemini is helping close the gap with competitors like ChatGPT and expects more capabilities to be showcased during next week’s conference.

New Features Powered by Gemini 2.5

At this year’s event, attendees will see a range of features powered by Gemini 2.5, including:

  • AI Agents:
    • Project Mariner
    • Jules
    • Deep Research

These technologies were first introduced late last year when software makers shifted their marketing strategy away from generative "copilots." These agents aim to improve worker productivity by executing multistep tasks on behalf of users and solving problems autonomously.

Additional Announcements

In addition to the AI advancements, Google will showcase:

  • New capabilities for Pixel smartphones and tablets running Android operating systems.
  • An updated version of Android Auto.
  • New tools for developers building apps using Flutter.
  • An expanded set of APIs (application programming interfaces) allowing third-party companies’ apps or services to work seamlessly with Google Maps.
  • Updates for Workspace collaboration tools used by businesses.
  • Improvements in YouTube video editing capabilities using artificial intelligence models similar to those powering Search Generative Experience, with support from YouTube creators who have already begun testing it out since last fall.

This year’s Google I/O promises to deliver significant innovations and enhancements across Google’s product ecosystem, reflecting the company’s commitment to advancing technology and improving user experience.
