Universities UK has called for greater collaboration between institutions to address the challenges facing the sector, according to a review of its work. The organisation stated that joint teaching programs and shared resources could help tackle issues with course delivery and funding.
Challenges to Collaboration
However, current regulations may hinder these efforts due to concerns about breaching business laws designed to promote competition among universities. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has expressed its willingness to support collaboration where possible, but stressed that any agreements must comply with existing laws.
Ongoing Government Review
A government review of higher education funding is currently underway in England, aiming to provide a long-term solution for the sector’s financial sustainability issues. Universities UK did not specify how exactly universities should collaborate or what form this collaboration should take in its statement.

The CMA will continue working with universities and other stakeholders on this issue as it develops further guidance on cooperation between higher education providers.
