Davy Russell, the Scottish Labour candidate, has won the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, securing 8,559 votes to take the top spot.

Election Results

  • Scottish National Party (SNP): 7,957 votes (2nd place)
  • Reform UK: 7,088 votes (3rd place)

At his count venue in Motherwell Town Hall, Mr. Russell expressed pride at being elected, stating, “This is a proud moment for me. But it’s not just about me – it’s about you. It’s about our community.”

Commitment to the Community

Mr. Russell vowed to prioritize the community, saying, “I will work every single day to do that.” He reiterated his campaign promise: “I said in this campaign that I will put this community first. And I mean it.”

Message to the SNP

According to Mr. Russell, the result sends a clear message: “Tonight we sent a clear message: we’re fed up of being ignored by Nicola Sturgeon and her SNP government.” He added, “We are fed up of being taken for granted by them and we are fed up of them taking us for granted as well.”

He emphasized that the election was not just about winning but about sending a message that the community deserves better: “Tonight was not just about winning an election – tonight was about sending a message that we deserve better than what they have given us so far.”

Future as MSP

“I am proud to be your new MSP and I will make sure that my voice is heard loud and clear at Holyrood on your behalf,” he concluded.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar welcomed Mr. Russell into the party, stating he would be an asset at Holyrood. “Davy has been an incredible campaigner for our party over many years,” he said. “He has worked tirelessly across South Lanarkshire, spreading hope and positivity wherever he goes. He is going to be an absolute asset as our new MSP at Holyrood. I look forward to working alongside him as part of our team there.”
