Historic Home Runs at Dodger Stadium

Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani delivered historic home runs at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, becoming the first duo to both homer in the same game’s opening inning. The reigning MVPs gave baseball fans what they were craving—towering home runs in the first inning.

The Home Runs

  • Aaron Judge took center stage first, crushing Tony Gonsolin’s 90 mph fastball with a powerful swing. His 446-foot home run sailed into the batter’s eye in center field, giving New York a 1-0 lead over Los Angeles.

    • Judge remarked, "I like playing against the best. You want to play against the best teams, best players. Ohtani is definitely one of those."
  • Shohei Ohtani responded with his own two-run homer off Max Fried just three pitches later for the LA Dodgers (57-37). The ball flew out past right-center field for his 21st home run this season, tying him with Aaron Judge atop Major League Baseball’s leading hitters heading into Game Three between the New York Yankees (62-34) and the LA Dodgers (57-37).

The crowd was electric as both players made their way around the bases after hitting their respective homers. Ohtani expressed his excitement about facing Judge again, saying, "It was pretty cool," through an interpreter.

Game Progression

  • The Yankees’ Aaron Hicks followed up by hitting a double off Gonsolin, giving New York a two-run lead before Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI single off Clayton Kershaw to make it 3-0.

  • Los Angeles finally got on board when Mookie Betts hit an RBI single off Frankie Montas and then scored on Will Smith’s sacrifice fly, cutting New York’s lead down by one run.

  • However, things didn’t go as planned for Los Angeles in the bottom of the second inning when Max Muncy grounded into a double play, allowing Anthony Volpe and Harrison Bader to each score from third base, extending New York’s lead back up by two runs.

  • Cody Bellinger struck out swinging against Frankie Montas but reached base safely due to catcher interference called on Jose Trevino, putting runners at second and third base for the LA Dodgers. However, they couldn’t capitalize further and went down quietly in order without scoring any more runs despite having runners at second and third base with no outs.
