Kangaroo Captured After Chase in Colorado

A kangaroo on the loose in southwestern Colorado has been captured by police after a brief chase. The 2-year-old male kangaroo, named Irwin, escaped from his owner’s property in Durango and was spotted roaming the streets, according to a statement from the Durango Police Department.

Previous Escapes

This is not Irwin’s first time on the loose. He managed to escape once before and was caught using a bag similar to a mother kangaroo’s pouch. However, he had grown too large for that method this time around.

Capture Efforts

Officer Shane Garrison devised a new plan to capture Irwin safely without causing harm to himself or others. He followed Irwin down an alleyway until they reached a backyard, where he managed to corner him near one of two houses.

Garrison grabbed hold of Irwin and carried him off in handcuffs—literally—as seen on another officer’s body cam footage. "I just wanted to make sure everyone was safe," Officer Garrison said about his decision.

Current Status

Irwin is currently being kept at home with his family while authorities investigate how he managed to escape again.
