Man Dies After Falling from Balcony in Calgary

A man has died after falling from a balcony at a condo tower in Calgary’s Victoria Park neighbourhood early Sunday morning.

Incident Details

  • The Calgary Police Service was called to 12 Avenue and 3 Street SE around 5 am on June 1, where officers found a man in medical distress. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
  • Outside the building, Carol Roberts and her husband from Edmonton reported damage to their car, with the roof completely caved in. The exterior of the building also showed signs of damage.

Eyewitness Accounts

  • "We came out Sunday morning to find our car absolutely destroyed," Roberts said, recalling her husband’s phone call from the lobby below. "He phoned me down below and said, ‘OK, somebody jumped or fell from the building.’"
  • Residents at The Guardian noted that loud noises and disruptions are not uncommon in the early hours due to numerous short-term rental units within the building.

Roberts mentioned that while there were celebrations happening outside their room during their stay, they did not experience any disruptions that affected their visit. "Yeah, can kinda feel that energy of like a celebration," she said about the partying sounds coming from outside. "I would just say that the youth that were celebrating there was definitely some partying but nothing interrupted our stay."

Ongoing Investigation

The incident is currently under investigation by the police. In response to inquiries about whether residents are being informed about what happened on Saturday night, CPS spokesperson Kevin Brookwell stated, "We are still investigating this incident, so we don’t have all details yet."

Brookwell added, "We will provide more information as soon as possible." The CPS is working with Alberta Health Services (AHS), which will conduct an autopsy on Monday afternoon.

"Once we receive those results, we will be able to determine the cause and manner of death," Brookwell wrote via email.
