Measles Alert Issued in Alberta

Measles Alert Issued in Alberta

Alberta Health Services has issued an alert regarding a confirmed measles infection in a person who may have exposed others in public settings. This announcement coincides with a rise in measles cases, which have reached 778 in Alberta as of Friday.

Current Situation

  • Calgary: The majority of cases are concentrated here, with 14 individuals diagnosed.
  • South Zone: Reports indicate 561 cases.
  • Children Under Five: More than 200 cases involve children under five years old.

Expert Insights

Dr. Daniel Gregson, an infectious disease specialist at Foothills Medical Centre and associate professor at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine, highlighted the increased vulnerability of young children to serious complications from measles:

“Measles complication rates are higher the younger you are. Under five, you have a much higher incidence of complications which require hospitalizations.”

Common Complications

  • Pneumonia
  • Diarrhea

Rare Complications

  • Encephalitis (can lead to hospital admissions)

Hospitalization Data

As of Tuesday morning, five individuals have been hospitalized due to measles, with two currently in the ICU. Notably, all five were unvaccinated against the disease.

Contributing Factors

Dr. Gregson attributes the high number of cases to:

  • Lower immunization rates
  • Gatherings of unimmunized individuals, particularly in schools, where transmission is more likely.

Prevention Measures

To mitigate further outbreaks, Dr. Gregson emphasized the importance of improved vaccination coverage:

“If we had better vaccination coverage, it would be less likely for these outbreaks to occur.”

Locations of Potential Exposure

Public health officials have identified several locations where exposure may have occurred:

  • J Club Grill & Bar: May 29, 8-11 PM
  • Country Hills Golf Club: May 30, 1-7 PM
  • Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge: June 1, 9 AM–6 PM
  • Kananaskis Country Golf Course: June 4, approximately 3:01-9:03 PM
