Measles Exposure Advisory in Southern Alberta

Measles Exposure Advisory in Southern Alberta

A measles exposure advisory has been issued for the south zone of Alberta by Alberta Health Services (AHS). The advisory is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. It covers a large area of the province, including Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. Since September, a total of 408 lab-confirmed cases have been reported in this region.

Vaccination Concerns

AHS believes that many more cases may be going undetected or unreported due to low vaccination rates. The agency warns that anyone born in or after 1970 who has fewer than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine is at risk for developing measles. This includes:

  • Children who have not received their second dose yet
  • Adults who are not up-to-date on their vaccinations

Symptoms to Monitor

Symptoms to monitor for measles include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Rash

Babies under one year old are eligible for additional immunizations beyond their routine two doses after reaching one year old. Infants aged six months to eleven months should receive an early dose of the vaccine while still receiving their routine vaccines at one year old.

AHS urges everyone to take precautions.

Cases Outside the Southern Zone

According to AHS data, there have also been exposures across Alberta outside the southern zone, with some areas reporting multiple cases since September. However, no new outbreaks have been reported outside these regions yet. The case breakdown is as follows:

  • Central zones: 93 cases reported since September
  • Northern zones: 41 cases reported
  • Edmonton area zones: 6 cases reported
  • Calgary Zone Public Health: 12 cases reported since September

The public health agency will continue to provide updates on its website if any new information becomes available about potential exposures or outbreaks elsewhere in the province.
