Mets' Bullpen Update: Brooks Raley's Recovery and Team Challenges

The New York Mets are counting on Brooks Raley to return from Tommy John surgery around the All-Star break, according to a team official. Raley has been making progress in his rehabilitation, facing hitters in live batting practice. He is expected to need 10-12 more sessions before he can move on to pitching in minor league games, having completed five of those sessions so far.

Raley’s Performance and Team Needs

Raley’s strong performance last season is a promising sign for the team. Despite appearing in just eight games due to elbow issues that required surgery, he pitched to a 2.80 ERA in 66 appearances. However, the Mets have lost two lefty relievers—A.J. Minter and Danny Young—to season-ending surgeries this year, leaving them thin on bullpen depth at that spot. Currently, Jose Castillo is the only lefty reliever on the active roster.

"We’re hoping Brooks can get back out there and help us," said an unnamed team official when asked about Raley’s potential return timeline.

If all goes well, it’s possible Raley could start a rehab assignment later this month, providing some much-needed relief for the struggling bullpen.

Current Bullpen Challenges

The Mets’ bullpen has been one of their biggest weaknesses this season, with several key players going down with injuries or underperforming compared to expectations entering spring training as starters or setup men for closer Edwin Diaz.

Mets manager Buck Showalter mentioned earlier this week that he was looking forward to getting some of his injured players back soon but did not provide any specific timeline for their returns, stating they would be evaluated "on an individual basis."

Recent Player Updates

  • Riley Smith was activated from the injured list on Monday after missing nearly three weeks due to right shoulder inflammation. However, he will not be available until at least Tuesday due to rules regarding players activated from the IL.
  • Smith had been dealing with right shoulder inflammation since May 16, which caused him to miss nearly three weeks of games.

The Mets are hopeful that Raley’s return, along with the recovery of other injured players, will bolster their bullpen as they navigate the challenges of the season.
