A 75-year-old man in Edmonton is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a moose in his backyard. Sung, who wishes to keep his last name private, was working in his yard when he came face-to-face with a female moose and her calf.
The Incident
Sung recounted the terrifying moment:
"We made eye contact and then she just runs at me. I tried to run behind the tree, but then I lost consciousness."
Neighbors Come to the Rescue
Sung’s neighbors, Freddy Bergeron and Renee Brodie, witnessed the attack and quickly called for help. Bergeron provided first aid to Sung before contacting emergency services:
"I had to get some first aid, got some bandages, and taped him up a little bit for his leg then my wife called 911."
Injuries Sustained
Sung suffered serious injuries, including:
- Three broken ribs
- A bump on the head that required stitches
- Two black eyes
He is currently recovering at home after spending time in the hospital following surgery on Tuesday evening.
Sung’s Reflection
Reflecting on his experience, Sung said:
"My experience? Horrible hahaha. I am thinking I’m a lucky guy. I’m still standing here talking to you."
Safety Warnings
In light of this incident, Edmonton police are warning residents about intermittent moose sightings in southeast Edmonton, particularly in the Fulton Ravine Park and Wayne Gretzky Drive area. They advise people to keep a safe distance if they encounter a moose.
Related Incident
In another incident this week, Alberta Fish Wildlife officer Mitch Vissers reported that a cow moose was hit by a vehicle along Wayne Gretzky Street around midnight Tuesday night but did not survive. Vissers stated:
"It did not survive so now we’re trying to re-locate."
Witness Account
Ren Brodie described seeing the calf before the attack:
"It looked so gangly, it just had big eyes like a baby deer."
