Netflix Expands Live Streaming Offerings

Netflix is expanding its live streaming offerings, reaching over 94 million global monthly active users. The company has been introducing live TV to its audience with various content, including:

  • Sports Content: Featuring WWE wrestling and boxing matches.
  • Comedy Shows: Including live stand-up specials.
  • Awards Events: Such as the Academy Awards.

Performance of Live Events

In a recent interview, Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria acknowledged that while some live events have performed well, others have not. She expressed excitement about the opportunities that live streaming presents.

Upcoming Events

One notable upcoming event is the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano rematch on July 11. This high-profile boxing match will be streamed exclusively on Netflix in over 190 countries and territories, through a partnership with Matchroom Boxing USA and DAZN Group. Additionally, Netflix will stream an exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary series featuring Taylor as she prepares for her rematch.

Future Plans

Netflix plans to enhance its live programming lineup with more comedy shows. The platform has already seen success with stand-up specials, such as:

  • "Dave Chappelle: Deep in the Heart of Texas": Watched by over 100 million households worldwide within four weeks of release (March 2022 – April 2022).

The company also intends to continue streaming awards events, including this year’s Academy Awards, which attracted over half a billion viewers globally (March 2023 – April 2023).

Partnerships

Netflix has partnered with the NFL for two Christmas Day matchups:

  • Dallas Cowboys at Washington Commanders
  • Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings

It remains unclear whether these games will be available exclusively on Netflix or through other platforms like NFL Sunday Ticket.

Competitive Landscape

This expansion comes as competitors like Amazon Prime Video are also enhancing their offerings, including exclusive rights deals similar to those signed by ESPN+ recently.
