Senate Hearing Highlights Tensions Over Refugee Policy

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) on Tuesday accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio of mishandling critical issues, including the situations in Sudan and the U.S. refugee process. Van Hollen stated that Rubio has "done the opposite" of what he promised during his confirmation.

Key Accusations Against Rubio

  • Funding Cuts: Van Hollen alleged that Rubio allowed Elon Musk to cut funding to USAID and other assistance programs, which he claimed resulted in deaths due to a lack of aid.
  • Refugee Process Critique: He criticized Rubio for prioritizing political ideology and race over truth or need in the U.S. refugee process, likening it to an apartheid system.

Rubio’s Defense

Rubio denied the accusations, asserting that Van Hollen’s regret indicates he is performing well as Secretary of State.

Discussion on Abrego Garcia

The conversation shifted to Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported during President Donald Trump’s administration. The Supreme Court instructed Secretary Antony Blinken not to return Garcia but also advised against deporting anyone from El Salvador until proper vetting could occur. Rubio claimed that no judge could dictate his foreign policy actions when questioned about discussions with El Salvadoran officials regarding Garcia’s return.

Rubio’s Stance

Rubio stated, "I would never tell you [the press], I wouldn’t tell anyone," regarding any communications about returning Garcia.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Insights

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho) remarked that there are “a lot” more questions than answers concerning Garcia’s deportation case. Rubio had previously promised during his confirmation hearing to “make sure we do everything we can” regarding such cases, although this commitment has been challenged by some lawmakers who question his control over the deportation process.

Van Hollen’s Visit to El Salvador

Van Hollen visited Abrego Garcia in El Salvador last month, despite being advised against it due to safety concerns. This claim was disputed by Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who labeled it a "lie." During their meeting at a hotel bar in San Salvador City on April 17, they reportedly enjoyed margaritas, which sparked controversy among Republicans who questioned whether this violated official travel rules prohibiting alcohol consumption outside diplomatic residences.

In response to the criticism, Van Hollen stated, “I don’t know why you’re so concerned about my drinks.”
