Summer Anime Preview: Gachiakuta

Summer has finally arrived, bringing with it a fresh batch of anime series. For fans of the shonen genre, there’s plenty to look forward to. Returning favorites like Dan Da Dan and Kaiju No. 8 are back, while a new show called Gachiakuta is set to debut next month.

Overview of Gachiakuta

Gachiakuta is based on Kei Urana’s ongoing manga and follows the story of Rudo Surebec, a teenager living in the slums of the Sphere. After his foster father’s death, Rudo is charged with murder and sentenced to The Pit – a massive dump site below town where outcasts and misfits reside.

The Pit and the Cleaners

In The Pit, Rudo meets Enjin, who rescues him and invites him to join the Cleaners. This group creates powerful weapons from objects imbued with their abilities and uses them to hunt monsters made from trash.

Rudo joins the Cleaners in pursuit of revenge against those responsible for his fate – specifically members of an elite organization called The Sphere. His goal is clear: make it back topside where he can exact justice on those who wronged him.

Studio Bones and Thematic Differences

Gachiakuta marks Studio Bones’ latest project after helming My Hero Academia and its spinoff Vigilantes. While both shows share some similarities in their themes of heroism, they differ significantly in tone:

  • My Hero Academia features Deku as its hero, who seeks justice through heroic means without resorting to violence.
  • Gachiakuta centers around Rudo, whose approach is far more aggressive as he harbors intense hatred towards those above ground.

Character Motivations

Rudo’s motivations are starkly different from Deku’s:

  • Rudo expresses his desire for vengeance with statements like, "I want you all dead," and "I’m going up there because I hate you all."
  • While Deku may be driven by anger at times, he never resorts to violence, whereas Rudo does not hesitate to use force against others.

Premiere Date

Gachiakuta premieres on July 5th on Crunchyroll for English-speaking audiences worldwide, except Asia.
